How do I get a happy and engaged workforce?
Stephens Scown are proud to be within the Times Top 100 Best Companies to Work For. Designed to recognise the well-being and motivation of employees, the survey is widely acknowledged as the most searching and comprehensive research into employee engagement in the UK and the results depend entirely on the opinion of employees. We firmly believe in the effect of this on our business results – here are our tips to help you to do the same:
- Actively acknowledge and make a commitment that engagement is important to the success of your business, and that it is an ongoing process, never a ‘finished’ project.
- Listen actively to what your people are saying – e.g. in staff surveys.
- Then talk with your people – in two-way communication, e.g. focus groups or staff workshops; as well as having visible and direct communication from leaders (going to see teams in person).
- Having listened, start to make changes – ranging from the simple (e.g. we introduced ‘thank you’ postcards), to making work fun (like lunchtime activities – but really listen to what employees want), through to more business focused activity such as getting employees more involved in organisational development projects.
- Review how you make your employees feel more part of what you’re doing. We became the first law firm to put in place an employee ownership scheme (‘Scownership’) but find what works for you.
- Finally, monitor results and the return on investment – via both financial and non-financial metrics.
