In this series, we introduce some of the people that make up Stephens Scown. We learn about their expertise, what drew them to join the legal profession and find out a little bit about who they are outside of work.
Here we introduce James Gill, a Solicitor in our IP, Data Protection and Technology team.
Can you share with us a little bit about your role and a typical day?
In my role, I am primarily focused on the areas of Intellectual Property (IP) and Technology. I advise clients on their IP portfolios, the licensing and assignment of IP and occasionally assisting from an IP perspective where clients are selling their businesses. I regularly draft IP-specific and technology contracts, representing a range of clients (both on the supplier and customer sides).
Why did you choose to specialise in your area of law?
Intellectual Property and Technology are both incredibly interesting (and rapidly developing) areas of law, and can often be a complex and challenging. Additionally, specialising in these areas has allowed me to advise clients operating in several sectors including Food and Drink. This keeps the work very interesting indeed!
My interest in Food and Drink began in University, where I was able to undertake analysis of the Food and Drink supply chain and specifically the UK wholesaler and retailer markets. Understanding how these, and other markets within the supply chain, worked kick-started my desire to advise clients in the Food and Drink industry. Working at Stephens Scown has given me a fantastic opportunity to do just that!
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Working closely with, and achieving the desired outcome for, the firm’s clients. In order to achieve this, I need to know (and really enjoy understanding) our clients’ business needs and objectives. I hasten to add that there are many other elements of “the job” that I find rewarding. From the interesting and constantly varying nature of the work to the different types of people and businesses that I interact with on a daily basis.
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be and why?
I didn’t know there was another option? But if I had to choose, running a Surf bar on the coast sounds nice!
How do you spend your time outside of work?
I like to spend my time outside of work… outside! Based in Exeter, I enjoy going for walks along the Exe and trips to the various beaches situated around Devon. I also enjoy running and cycling (despite the recent chilly weather).
What does it mean to work for Stephens Scown, what makes us different?
Stephens Scown cares about its people (referred to as “Scowners”), an ethos which permeates the business and is derived from several factors including that it is employee owned. The firm is also very conscious of its environment, being very much focused on the South West and a certified B Corp. The firm also has a fantastic array of specialisms, which gives a Food and Drink client a well-rounded and high standard legal service.
I am very grateful to have trained and qualified at such a great place to work.
