As a B Corp™ Certified law firm, which is committed to balancing people, planet, purpose and profit, Stephens Scown takes great pride in its sustainable ethos and has been recognised for that approach with an awards shortlisting.
Category Finalist
With Exeter City Council declaring a commitment to making the city carbon neutral by 2030, the Exeter Sustainability Awards recognises and champions those making strides in this area.
Whether it’s a business, community group or school, or an individual going the extra mile in their community, across all categories it celebrates the people making a difference to sustainability across Exeter.
The firm has been confirmed as a finalist within the category of Medium/Large Business (50+ employees), thanks to its efforts across the organisation in promoting sustainability as a key part of its values.
Sustainable Commitment
It’s a category that recognises projects of sustainable energy, climate resilience, environmental and social best practice or environmental and social innovation. Stephens Scown has made great strides in its sustainability goals over the last year, as seen in our most recent impact report.
The submission focused on the Firm’s commitment to reaching its Net Zero goal of being carbon neutral by the end of 2025. That’s combined with an internal Net Zero Hero campaign, which has brought to life the challenge with information, incentives and inspiration, encouraging all employees to play a part in achieving the Firm’s Net Zero aspirations. This is alongside an overall reduction in the Firm’s carbon footprint of 78% since 2019-20 and a reduction in energy use of 38%.
Recent refurbishment work at Curzon House, our Exeter office, resulted in the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of the building increasing from a C to an A. The higher EPC rating indicated that the property has a lower carbon footprint, and improving to an A means Curzon House is contributing less greenhouse gas emissions.
Stephens Scown’s sustainability lead partner, Verity Slater, commented: “Being a B Corp™ certified organisation, the Firm has consistently proven its commitment to balancing people, planet, and profit, recognising that we want to leave behind a better world, and knowing that our stand on environmental and sustainable issues is every bit as important to our clients as it is to our colleagues.”
With the ceremony taking place on 21 March, it provides a welcome opportunity to meet and connect with other like-minded organisations and groups committed to change and progress in sustainability, and one in which the Firm will be playing its part.
