For anybody going through a divorce, it can be a stressful time, and one where having someone in your corner can make all the difference to the outcome. For one client, Kai Whicker, Associate in the Family team, provided more than legal support.
As is true for many, the client had never previously had cause to require legal help. That all changed when he made the decision to seek a divorce. Living in the South West, he had heard of Stephens Scown, and it was after speaking to a friend who recommended the firm that he decided to take the plunge and make initial contact. A sole trader working as a painter and decorator, he wanted to get information on his options before deciding on how to progress.
Following that first call, the client met Kai for an opening consultation, and following the meeting, the client agreed to move forward with the divorce and to work with Kai and Stephens Scown. Working through the process of obtaining the divorce took the best part of a year from start to finish, with Kai on hand every step of the way to ensure the client was kept updated and advised throughout.
Going above and beyond
Speaking about his interactions and experience in working with Kai, the client said, “one day I was feeling low when I replied to one of his emails. I didn’t think about it, but he saw something in the message, picked up the phone and called to check in and make sure that I was OK.
“I was blown away by it. I know that I was paying for a service and his time as a lawyer, but it amazed me that he’d noticed enough in my reply to then take the time to call and see how I was doing.
“As far as I’m concerned, Kai went well above and beyond what I would have expected, and it felt like more than a transactional relationship. He’s a brilliant person and great at what he does. I think Stephens Scown can be very proud to have him working in their team.”
Ongoing Support
After his divorce was finalised with the desired outcome, the client’s experience saw him continue to work with Stephens Scown as he sold his house and arranged to have a Will. Having that link with Kai, the client was able to utilise Stephens Scown’s other specialist teams to process the work, while Kai continued to check in and make sure that the client was OK.
