We all know that exercise is good for your body and keeping fit, but it’s also perfect therapy for your mind and general wellbeing. Katie Thomas, owner and fitness instructor of Good Vibes Studio & Gym, based at Exeter Sports Academy explains.
We are all a lot more health conscious these days and as a result more people than ever are working out to get a toned and healthier body, but did you know that a workout will not only achieve your fitness goals, but it is also great for your mental health, confidence and can increase your productivity at work/in daily life.
Physical activity has been shown to have a positive impact on our mood. It can reduce anxiety, stress and increase self-esteem. And it can help keep mental health problems at bay, or improve the quality of life of those suffering with mental health problems.
Just 75 to 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as cycling or fast walking, is all it takes to boost your endorphins. Plus you get quality ‘you’ time and get to socialise with others. Whether it is a class at a gym, or even going out for a walk at your favourite place, the beach, the woods it’s perfect exercise and so good for your wellbeing.
Or for a simple workout at home, try this quick routine:
- Bottom stair step-ups 30 seconds,
- squats x 10, press-ups x 10,
- burpees x 10,
- crunches x 10 – repeat 3 times.
Raising your heart rate releases the endorphins you need to help you feel happier.
Setting yourself a challenge, however big or small will make you feel good and give you a big sense of achievement. Step outside today and go for it!
