In this series, we introduce some of the people that make up Stephens Scown. We learn about their expertise, what drew them to join the legal profession and find out a little bit about who they are outside of work.
Here we introduce Tyler Richards, a solicitor in our Family team.
Can you share with us a little bit about your role and a typical day?
As a solicitor in the Family Finance team, I specialise in the resolution of financial matters on divorce. Day-to-day I work my way through a varied case load involving a wide range of clients in a wide range of different situations. My work changes week to week but will often involve assisting clients with the preparation of their financial disclosure, drafting Forms E and other court documents such as replies to questionnaire, drafting proposals for settlement and liaising with clients generally. There is also the occasional court hearing or conference with Counsel. I also assist senior members of the team with complex cases involving valuable business assets, public sector pension schemes, farming assets and more. My expertise is growing each day as I am surrounded by such a knowledgeable and experienced team.
Why did you specialise in family law?
Family law was my favourite topic whilst studying at Exeter University and I was lucky enough to carry out an internship with the firm in my second year (where I experienced family law in practice) and from then on I knew it was what I wanted to do. I take great pleasure in helping people get through one of the most stressful and difficult times in their lives. It is truly very rewarding.
What do you love most about your role?
Working with clients to achieve a resolution. Helping people reach agreements in relation to their finances following separation that will enable them to move on independently in the knowledge that they have achieved a fair outcome is a great feeling.
How do you spend your time outside of work?
I am obsessed with CrossFit and train at my local gym as much as I can each week (a great way to de-stress after a long day). I also enjoy going for long Cornish walks with my beautiful golden retriever Indy and my Fiancé Jake (usually involving a stop-off at a pub!).
If you weren’t a lawyer, what you be and why?
Hopefully a lottery winner, but if not probably something to do with sport.
What does it mean to work for Stephens Scown, what makes us different?
Stephens Scown is a fantastic place to work. I have been here for almost six years and the culture and atmosphere has always felt supportive, professional and innovative. Achieving B Corp status was a great achievement and that really demonstrates what the firm is all about. It feels like one big family with lots of different specialisms and teams that all work together and are working towards the same goals and standards. It is a very special place to be.
