The Charity Commission has published five short user friendly guides designed to make it quicker and easier for a charity trustee to find key information on their duties, taking into account that the vast majority of trustees are unpaid volunteers.
Developing and improving the accessibility of its guidance has been a key objective for the Commission as set out in its 2020-21 Business Plan. The Commission has stressed that although the guides are basic, they are of use to both new and more experienced trustees.
The guides cover the following topics considered to be the ‘core syllabus’ for charity trustees:
- Financial oversight;
- Achieving a charity’s purposes;
- Good decision making;
- Addressing conflicts of interest; and
- What to file with the Commission and what support is available.
If you are unsure about your role as a trustee or would like to discuss any matters relating to your charity, our Charities team can advise you.
